Ocean City, Maryland Excursion - October 15 - 18, 2009

If you were to imagine some of the most horrible driving conditions possible in your Corvette - then you would begin to have an idea of what our valiant fellow members went through while driving to Ocean City. Maryland.  Thanks to Mike and Martha for the following write up and the majority of the photos of "The Experience".

Four Corvettes made the journey and it was loads of fun by all accounts. Enthusiastic reviews from everyone!  Well for starters under the "things you missed" category you can add rain (lots of it), snow, flooding, sand storm, high winds and - in spite of the weather - an excellent time.

We all met Thursday morning at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant just off Interstate 81 at Watertown, NY coming from our various locations. Bob and Sue Baggs were having air pressure problems with their left front tire so they went on ahead to a garage in Syracuse where we met them after breakfast. Once that was fixed we hit the road for our adventure a little later than planned but full of anticipation. We ran into rain in Pennsylvania which quickly turned to wet snow. Not the kind of weather we  all envision for our beloved cars. According to Brian Holmes his exterior thermostat showed the temperature was dropping (no such electronic gizmos in our '80). We were all concerned with the road conditions. If the temperature dropped too far the roads would become icy and we would be in trouble. This didn't happen but there were a few brief moments where you could feel the tires fighting for grip. The snow stopped (it was still raining though) and the temperature began to rise. We spent Thursday night in Wilmington, Delaware.

In the morning we heard the area we had gone through Thursday afternoon had gotten 12" of wet snow over night. Thank God we got through when we did! It was on to Ocean City now via the coastal highway only to find out that because of fairly large storms up and down the coast they were experiencing flooding at high tide. As we approached Ocean City, we had to drive through water (that's salt water) completely covering the entire highway at a number of spots. I did notice under the hood later at the hotel that there was water on my valve covers and air cleaner. We got our rooms (all together on the same floor), checked in with the organizers for the weekend and had lunch at a restaurant across the road from the hotel. We paid a visit to liquor and beer stores also across the street to pick up some assorted libations. We met in Brian and Suzanne's room for some drinks and laughs until it was time to go down for organized dinner. After dinner we all met in our room this time for more drinking and more laughs. It was great not having to worry about driving.

In the morning we drove to the "inlet parking" at the end of the peninsula that is Ocean City at 7:30 a.m. (coincidentally high tide) only to find roads were flooded. We made it through some but had to turn off, as the water was much too deep for our  low-slung cars. We ended up going the last couple of blocks the wrong way on a one-way street (we were only going one-way ... right!). The wind was so strong off the water it was blowing sand everywhere. We lined up for the start of the rally all the time questioning our sanity! The rally (poker run) was approximately 65 miles through back roads (all paved) and man did it rain. We got back around 12:30 p.m. and had time for a quick lunch and then back to the inlet for the parade on the boardwalk. The wind was wicked ... blowing sand around like a sand storm. The turn out for the parade was incredible given the conditions.   There must have been 600 Corvettes of all generations and colors ... many of which had never seen anything close to these weather conditions before. There was a lot more people watching than you would expect given the weather.

After the parade it was back to the hotel for more drinks and laughs. Then it was down to the awards dinner. We headed for home Sunday morning ... in the rain of course! The weather began clearing up with sunshine breaking through in the afternoon. Our ride home was quite nice. We did the return trip in one day stopping near Syracuse for something to eat. We said our goodbyes there as we each had different plans from that point on.

In spite of the weather we all survived, including our cars, to have a memorable fun-filled weekend. We had just about everything you can think of thrown at us and in spite of it all we had fun and everyone says they plan on doing it again next year. How much worse could it possibly be? Thanks to Bob and Sue for leading the group, Brian and Suzanne and MJ and Wendy for making the weekend what it was. Good people and good times can make up for anything Mother Nature might throw at us.
